What is Akuma?

Definition

Akuma (悪魔, “Demon” or “Devil”) is a character in the Street Fighter video game series created by Capcom. He is the evil counterpart to Ryu and Ken, a master of the “Satsui no Hado” (Surge of Murderous Intent) — a dark energy that corrupts its user. Akuma is known for his red hair, glowing eyes, prayer beads, and a signature move called the “Shun Goku Satsu” (Instant Hell Murder), which is one of the most powerful and visually dramatic attacks in fighting game history. Akuma is the ultimate boss, the hidden fighter, and the character every player fears.

Why It Matters

Akuma is one of the most iconic villains in video game history. He represents the dark side of martial arts — the temptation to use power for destruction rather than self-improvement. His design (bare-chested, beads, red hair, glowing eyes) is instantly recognizable, and his moveset is built around overwhelming force. Akuma also popularized the concept of “evil versions” of existing characters in fighting games — the idea that your hero could have a corrupted, more powerful counterpart. This trope has been copied endlessly in games, comics, and anime. Akuma’s influence extends beyond Street Fighter: he appears in Tekken, Marvel vs. Capcom, and other crossovers, always as the most dangerous fighter on the roster.

Example

“He unlocked Akuma in Street Fighter II Turbo. It took a secret code. Akuma was faster, stronger, and had a move that could defeat anyone in one hit. He used Akuma against his brother. His brother stopped playing. Some victories are too complete. Akuma teaches that lesson.”
