What is Al Green?

Definition

Al Green (born Albert Leornes Greene, 1946) is an American singer, songwriter, and pastor who is one of the most influential figures in soul music history. His hits include “Let’s Stay Together,” “Tired of Being Alone,” “I’m Still in Love with You,” and “Love and Happiness.” Green’s voice — smooth, vulnerable, and effortlessly sensual — defined the sound of 1970s soul. But his career took a dramatic turn in 1974 when his girlfriend died by suicide in his home, and Green himself was severely burned. He interpreted this as a message from God, became an ordained pastor, and spent the next decades splitting his time between secular soul music and gospel.

Why It Matters

Al Green is the bridge between earthly love and divine love. His secular songs are some of the most romantic ever recorded — “Let’s Stay Together” is still a wedding standard 50 years later. His gospel songs are equally powerful, but in a different direction. The tension between these two worlds is what makes Green fascinating: he never fully abandoned either. He performed at the White House, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and was sampled by countless hip-hop artists (most notably on “Stay Together” by Big Daddy Kane and “Let’s Stay Together” by Obie Trice). Green’s influence is everywhere in modern R&B: his phrasing, his vulnerability, his ability to make a love song sound like a prayer.

Example

“He put on ‘Let’s Stay Together’ at 2 AM after a fight. The song didn’t fix anything. But it created a space where fixing things felt possible. That’s Al Green’s power. He doesn’t solve problems. He makes them bearable.”
