Definition
Al Jazeera is a Qatar-based international news network launched in 1996. It was the first 24-hour Arabic-language news channel and quickly became one of the most influential and controversial media organizations in the world. Al Jazeera is known for its willingness to broadcast voices that Western media often ignores — including Islamist groups, opposition figures, and perspectives from the Global South. The network expanded into English in 2006 with Al Jazeera English, and has won numerous awards for its journalism. But it is also frequently accused of bias, of serving Qatari political interests, and of being a mouthpiece for terrorism by governments that don’t like its coverage.
Why It Matters
Al Jazeera changed the media landscape in the Middle East and beyond. Before Al Jazeera, state-controlled television dominated the Arab world, offering little independent reporting. Al Jazeera’s slogan was “The Opinion and the Other Opinion” — a radical idea in a region where dissent was often censored. The network became famous (or infamous) for broadcasting Osama bin Laden’s video messages after 9/11, which made it simultaneously a source of crucial information and a target of American government anger. Al Jazeera’s role in the Arab Spring (2010-2011) was also pivotal: it broadcast protests and government crackdowns live, becoming a tool for both revolution and information warfare. In the West, Al Jazeera English built a reputation for serious, in-depth journalism that rivaled the BBC. But in the US, it struggled to find cable distribution and eventually shut down its American channel in 2016. The network remains a Rorschach test: what you think of Al Jazeera often reveals what you think about power, media, and the Middle East.
