Definition
Alan Rickman (1946-2016) was a British actor whose career spanned stage, film, and television, but who is best remembered for two iconic roles: Hans Gruber in Die Hard (1988) — the greatest Christmas movie villain in history — and Severus Snape in the Harry Potter film series (2001-2011). Rickman was known for his deep, distinctive voice, his precise diction, and his ability to play characters who were simultaneously menacing and vulnerable. He was a Shakespearean actor who became a blockbuster star, a villain who made audiences root for him, and a man who turned every line of dialogue into a small masterpiece of timing.
Why It Matters
Alan Rickman proved that villains are more interesting than heroes. His Hans Gruber was cultured, witty, and terrifying — a terrorist who quoted Alexander the Great and wore a suit better than the protagonist. His Snape was the heart of the Harry Potter series: a character who appeared to be a villain for seven films and was revealed to be the story’s most tragic hero. Rickman knew Snape’s secret from the beginning — J.K. Rowling told him before anyone else — and he played every scene with that knowledge hidden behind his eyes. Rickman also had a gift for comedy: his roles in Galaxy Quest, Love Actually, and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (where he stole the film from Kevin Costner) showed his range. When he died of pancreatic cancer in 2016, the internet mourned collectively. He was that rare actor who was universally loved by both critics and fans.
Example
“He watched Die Hard every Christmas. Not for Bruce Willis. For Alan Rickman. When Gruber fell from the Nakatomi Plaza, he didn’t cheer. He felt a strange sadness. The villain had been more interesting than the hero. The villain always is. Rickman knew that. That’s why he played them so well.”
