Definition
Albuquerque is the largest city in New Mexico, with a population of about 560,000. But for most people under 40, Albuquerque is not a real city — it’s a fictional location. It is the primary setting of Breaking Bad and its prequel Better Call Saul, two of the most critically acclaimed television series in history. The show’s creator, Vince Gilligan, chose Albuquerque partly because of New Mexico’s tax incentives for film production. The city became so associated with the show that tourism spiked, and locations like the White family house, Los Pollos Hermanos, and Walter White’s car wash became pilgrimage sites for fans.
Why It Matters
Albuquerque is the greatest example of how a TV show can rebrand a city. Before Breaking Bad (2008-2013), Albuquerque was known for… well, most people didn’t know what it was known for. The Balloon Fiesta? The Sandia Mountains? The fact that Bugs Bunny always missed his turn there? After Breaking Bad, Albuquerque became the meth capital of the imagination — a city of desert landscapes, strip malls, and moral decay. The show’s visual palette (beige, brown, blue sky) became synonymous with the city itself. Local businesses embraced the association: you can buy blue rock candy “meth,” tour the filming locations, and visit a replica of Walter White’s house. Albuquerque matters because it proves that a place’s identity can be completely rewritten by fiction — and that the fiction is often more interesting than the reality.
