Definition
Albus Dumbledore is a fictional character in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, the headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and arguably the most powerful wizard of his time. Dumbledore is the mentor, the protector, and the secret-keeper of the series — a wise, eccentric old man with a long white beard, half-moon spectacles, and a fondness for sherbet lemons. But he is also one of the most morally complex characters in children’s literature: a man who believes in the greater good, who keeps crucial information from his students, and whose past includes a flirtation with wizarding fascism and the death of his own sister.
Why It Matters
Dumbledore is the archetype of the “wise old mentor” — the Gandalf, the Obi-Wan, the Yoda — but with a twist. He’s not entirely trustworthy. Rowling deliberately made him a flawed hero: he withholds information, manipulates Harry, and makes decisions that cost lives in the name of defeating Voldemort. This complexity made Dumbledore more interesting than the standard mentor figure, but it also made him controversial. After the series ended, Rowling revealed that Dumbledore was gay and had been in love with the dark wizard Grindelwald in his youth. This revelation was praised by some for representation and criticized by others as retroactive diversity — an attempt to add depth to a character without actually writing it into the books. Dumbledore’s legacy is now split between the beloved film portrayal by Richard Harris and Michael Gambon, and the messy, expanded-universe version in the Fantastic Beasts films, which attempted to show his backstory and was widely criticized.
