Definition
Alcatraz is a small island in San Francisco Bay that served as a federal prison from 1934 to 1963. Known as “The Rock,” it housed some of America’s most notorious criminals, including Al Capone, George “Machine Gun” Kelly, and Robert Franklin Stroud (the “Birdman of Alcatraz”). The prison was designed to be escape-proof: surrounded by freezing water, strong currents, and shark-infested waters (though the sharks part is mostly myth). Only 36 inmates ever attempted escape; none are confirmed to have succeeded. Alcatraz closed in 1963 because the buildings were decaying and the operating costs were three times higher than any other federal prison.
Why It Matters
Alcatraz is one of the most famous prisons in the world, not because of what happened there, but because of what it represents: absolute isolation, ultimate punishment, and the American fantasy of escape. The prison has been the subject of films, books, video games, and conspiracy theories. The 1962 escape attempt by Frank Morris and the Anglin brothers — who dug through walls with spoons, left paper-mache heads in their beds, and vanished into the bay — remains an unsolved mystery. Did they drown? Did they make it to South America? The FBI says they drowned. The legend says they survived. The 1979 film Escape from Alcatraz starring Clint Eastwood cemented the prison’s mythic status. Today, Alcatraz is a museum and one of San Francisco’s most visited tourist attractions.
Example
“He took the ferry to Alcatraz on a foggy morning. The audio tour played recordings of former guards and inmates. He stood in Cell 14D, the isolation cell, and felt a chill that had nothing to do with the weather. Alcatraz isn’t scary because of ghosts. It’s scary because of what humans did to each other there. And what they pretended was justice.”
