Definition
Alt F4 is a keyboard shortcut in Windows that closes the active window. It is also the oldest trick in internet trolling. In online gaming, forums, and chat rooms, “Alt F4” has been used for decades as a prank: a troll tells a new user to “press Alt F4 to unlock a secret feature” or “to enable god mode,” and the victim closes their game or browser. The prank is so old that it predates most modern internet culture, yet it still works because there is always a new generation of users who don’t know the shortcut. Alt F4 is the internet’s original deception — simple, effective, and endlessly repeatable.
Why It Matters
Alt F4 represents the internet’s culture of hazing. Every online community has its initiation rituals, and tricking newcomers into closing their programs is the most universal. The prank has been documented in games from World of Warcraft to Counter-Strike to Roblox. It has become a meme template: “Press Alt F4 to [something desirable]” is instantly recognizable as a trap. The persistence of Alt F4 as a prank is also a commentary on how little online culture has changed. The platforms evolve, the graphics improve, the memes multiply — but the fundamental urge to trick a stranger into pressing two keys remains eternal.
Example
“He was new to the game. Someone said, ‘Press Alt F4 to double your gold.’ He pressed it. The game closed. He sat in silence. He reopened the game. He played for three hours. Someone said, ‘Press Alt F4 to teleport.’ He pressed it. The game closed again. He was not learning. He was being educated. The internet is a cruel teacher.”
