Definition
America (officially the United States of America) is a country in North America with a population of over 330 million. It is the world’s third-largest country by area and the largest economy by GDP. Founded in 1776 through a revolution against British colonial rule, America has become a global superpower, a cultural exporter, and a political paradox. It is simultaneously the land of the free and the home of the highest incarceration rate in the world; the inventor of the internet and the birthplace of conspiracy theories; the leader of the free world and a country that can’t agree on whether healthcare is a right. America is not a place. It is an argument that has been going on for 250 years.
Why It Matters
America is the central character of the modern world. Its movies, music, and technology dominate global culture. Its military and economy shape international politics. Its ideals — democracy, freedom, equality — are both genuinely inspiring and frequently betrayed by its own actions. The American paradox is that the country that put humans on the moon also has crumbling bridges, mass shootings, and political gridlock. The country that invented the iPhone also has the highest child poverty rate in the developed world. America matters because it is the world’s mirror: whatever you think about power, inequality, and progress, you will find evidence for it in America. The country is too big, too diverse, and too contradictory to be captured by any single story. It is a Rorschach test in the shape of a nation.
