American Idiot is a 2004 rock opera album by the American punk band Green Day. It tells the story of the “Jesus of Suburbia,” a lower-middle-class adolescent who rebels against suburban life, joins the city, and descends into disillusionment. The album was a direct response to the Bush administration, the Iraq War, and the post-9/11 media landscape. It produced hit singles like “American Idiot,” “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” “Holiday,” and “Wake Me Up When September Ends.” The album was adapted into a Broadway musical in 2010 and remains one of the best-selling albums of the 21st century.
