Airhead is slang for a person who is perceived as unintelligent, ditzy, or lacking common sense. The word suggests an empty head — full of air instead of brains. It’s been used since the 1980s, often to describe someone who is forgetful, easily distracted, or slow to understand things. The term is gendered in practice: while it can apply to anyone, it’s disproportionately used to describe women, particularly attractive women, reflecting a cultural stereotype that beauty and intelligence are mutually exclusive.
