Definition
An alarm clock is a device designed to wake people up at a specific time, usually by making an unpleasant sound. It is the most hated object in human history. Before smartphones, alarm clocks were physical machines with bells, buzzers, or radios. The digital revolution gave us the smartphone alarm, which is somehow worse — because now your alarm is also your portal to infinite distraction, and the first thing you see in the morning is a screen full of notifications. The alarm clock is the enemy of sleep, the herald of responsibility, and the daily reminder that time is not on your side.
Why It Matters
The alarm clock is a perfect symbol of modern alienation. It forces you out of your natural sleep cycle to conform to an artificial schedule invented by industrial capitalism. The snooze button is a tiny act of rebellion — nine more minutes of freedom, repeated until panic sets in. The alarm clock also reveals personality: some people set one alarm and wake up immediately (psychopaths), some set five alarms in five-minute intervals (anxiety), and some use songs they love, which eventually ruins the song forever. The alarm clock is the first violence of the day — a violent interruption of peace, followed by the violence of getting out of bed, followed by the violence of capitalism. It is, in short, the beginning of everything you resent.
