Definition
An algorithm is a set of rules or instructions that a computer follows to solve a problem, perform a calculation, or complete a task. In everyday life, algorithms determine what you see on social media, what products Amazon recommends, what route Google Maps suggests, and whether your job application gets past a digital screening. Algorithms are not magic; they are math — often complex, sometimes biased, and always created by humans who bring their own assumptions to the code. The word comes from the 9th-century Persian mathematician Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi, whose name was Latinized as “Algoritmi.”
Why It Matters
Algorithms are the invisible architecture of modern life. They decide what news you see, who you date, what music you discover, and whether you get a loan. They are also frequently biased: facial recognition algorithms have higher error rates for Black faces; hiring algorithms have discriminated against women; predictive policing algorithms have targeted minority neighborhoods. The term “algorithm” has become a cultural shorthand for “the machine is making decisions and we don’t fully understand why.” When someone says “the algorithm showed me this video,” they are acknowledging a loss of agency — a machine is curating their reality. Algorithms are powerful, opaque, and increasingly in control of the information ecosystem.
