Definition
Anglerfish are a family of deep-sea fish (Lophiiformes) known for their bizarre appearance, bioluminescent lure, and one of the most extreme sexual dimorphisms in the animal kingdom. Female anglerfish are large, predatory, and equipped with a glowing esca (the “lure”) that dangles in front of their mouths to attract prey in the darkness of the deep ocean. Male anglerfish are tiny — sometimes less than 1% of the female’s size — and exist solely to find a female, bite into her flesh, and fuse with her body, becoming a permanent parasitic attachment that provides sperm while receiving nutrients from her bloodstream. The male eventually loses his eyes, fins, and internal organs, becoming nothing more than a pair of testicles attached to the female. It is one of the most disturbing reproductive strategies in nature.
Why It Matters
The anglerfish is the internet’s favorite nightmare creature. Its appearance — a gaping mouth full of translucent teeth, a dangling light bulb, and the general look of something that should not exist — makes it perfect for memes, horror art, and “nature is terrifying” content.
