What is Anal Cunt?

Definition

Anal Cunt (often abbreviated as A.C. or AxCx) was an American grindcore band formed in 1988 in Massachusetts. They are widely regarded as one of the most offensive, deliberately provocative, and musically extreme bands in the history of rock music. The band’s name was chosen specifically to be as offensive as possible, and their song titles followed the same philosophy: “Hitler Was a Sensitive Man,” “I Sent Concentration Camp Footage to America’s Funniest Home Videos,” and “Women: Nature’s Punching Bag” are actual song titles. Their music consisted of short, chaotic bursts of noise — many songs were under 30 seconds — and they played hundreds of shows before disbanding in 2011 after the death of frontman Seth Putnam.

Why It Matters

Anal Cunt is the ultimate test of where the line between art and offense lies. The band was not subtle: they were explicitly, deliberately, and proudly offensive. They offended everyone: feminists, Jews, Christians, the disabled, and their own fans. The question is whether they were making a point about shock culture or just being shock for shock’s sake. Seth Putnam claimed they were satirizing political correctness by being so over-the-top that no one could take them seriously. Critics claimed they were just edgelords with guitars. The truth is probably both. Anal Cunt matters because they proved that you can be famous for being hated. They are the internet troll as a band: their entire existence was calculated to provoke, and they succeeded so completely that they became a legend of extreme music. They are also proof that “it’s just a joke” is not a defense that works for everyone.

Example

“He heard Anal Cunt at 16. The song was 12 seconds long. The title was unprintable. He laughed. He told his friends. They laughed. He listened again at 30. He didn’t laugh. The 12 seconds were the same. He was different. The offense had not changed. His tolerance for it had. That was the lesson. Or maybe the trap.”
