Definition
Ant-Man is a Marvel Comics superhero created by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, and Jack Kirby in 1962. The character has been portrayed by multiple people in the comics, but the most famous incarnation is Scott Lang, played by Paul Rudd in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Ant-Man’s power is the ability to shrink to the size of an ant while maintaining human strength, thanks to the “Pym Particles” invented by the original Ant-Man, Hank Pym. The character’s MCU films — Ant-Man (2015), Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018), and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023) — are notable for their comedic tone, heist-movie structure, and the fact that they are about a superhero whose power is being small. In a universe of gods, aliens, and wizards, Ant-Man is just a guy who can get tiny.
Why It Matters
Ant-Man is the Marvel hero who shouldn’t work but does. He has no tragic backstory, no world-ending stakes, and no iconic villain. He is a thief who stole a suit. His superpower is shrinking. And yet the films are genuinely funny, creatively staged, and surprisingly emotional. The character also became an internet meme for his role in Avengers: Endgame (2019), where his suggestion to “go back in time and get the stones” becomes the plot engine for the entire film. The internet joked that the most powerful Avengers film was powered by a guy who talks to ants. Ant-Man matters because he is the proof that Marvel’s formula works even at its most absurd: take a ridiculous concept, cast a charming actor, add heart, and the audience will follow anywhere. Even to the Quantum Realm. Especially to the Quantum Realm.
