Definition

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the field of computer science dedicated to creating systems that can perform tasks typically requiring human intelligence: reasoning, learning, problem-solving, perception, language understanding, and decision-making. The term was coined in 1956 at the Dartmouth Conference, and the field has since gone through multiple cycles of hype and disappointment (“AI winters” and “AI summers”). Modern AI is dominated by machine learning, particularly deep learning, which uses neural networks — algorithms inspired by the human brain — to process vast amounts of data and identify patterns. In the 2020s, AI has become a transformative force: large language models (like GPT-4, Claude, and the system you are interacting with right now) can generate human-like text, answer questions, write code, and assist with creative tasks. AI also powers image generation (DALL-E, Midjourney), speech recognition, medical diagnosis, autonomous vehicles, and financial trading systems. The field is simultaneously one of the most promising and most controversial technologies of the 21st century, raising questions about job displacement, algorithmic bias, privacy, and the potential for artificial general intelligence (AGI) that could surpass human capabilities.

Why It Matters

Artificial Intelligence is the internet’s favorite thing to be both excited and terrified about. In the space of a decade, AI has gone from a niche academic field to a daily reality: the autocomplete in your email, the recommendation algorithm on your feed, the chatbot that answers your customer service query, and the image generator that creates art from a text prompt. The internet’s relationship with AI is a case study in cognitive dissonance: users mock AI-generated content (“AI slop”) while using AI tools to create their own content; they fear AI job displacement while outsourcing their own tasks to AI; they worry about AI consciousness while anthropomorphizing every chatbot they encounter. The 2022–2023 explosion of generative AI — ChatGPT, Midjourney, Stable Diffusion — created a new internet culture: AI-generated memes, “prompt engineering” as a skill, debates about whether AI art is “real” art, and existential anxiety about what it means to be human when a machine can write your essay, draw your portrait, and simulate your voice. AI matters because it is not just a technology. It is a mirror. It reflects our creativity, our laziness, our fears, and our hopes. And the internet is where that mirror is held up, every day, to everyone.
