Definition
The Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) is a bird of prey native to North America and the national bird and symbol of the United States. Despite its name, the eagle is not bald; the word “bald” in this context derives from an older English meaning of “white,” referring to the bird’s distinctive white head and tail feathers. With a wingspan of up to 2.3 meters and a fierce, hooked beak, the bald eagle is an apex predator that feeds primarily on fish. It was chosen as the national symbol in 1782 for its perceived strength, longevity, and majestic appearance — though Benjamin Franklin famously argued that the turkey would have been a more respectable choice.
Why It Matters
The bald eagle is more than a bird. It is a visual shorthand for American patriotism, military power, and national identity. It appears on currency, government seals, military insignia, and countless pieces of patriotic merchandise. The eagle’s image is so ubiquitous that it has become invisible — Americans see it daily without registering its symbolic weight. But the eagle’s history is also one of environmental redemption: by the 1960s, the species was nearly driven to extinction by hunting, habitat loss, and the pesticide DDT. Its recovery, thanks to conservation efforts and the banning of DDT, is now cited as a rare environmental success story. The bald eagle is thus a symbol of both American exceptionalism and American fragility.
Example
At a Fourth of July parade, a man wears a t-shirt featuring a bald eagle clutching an American flag in its talons, with the caption “Freedom isn’t free.” The eagle is not just an image; it is an argument. It says: this nation is strong, predatory, and divinely favored. The man has never seen a bald eagle in the wild, but he carries one on his chest as a statement of identity. The bird belongs to the government, but the meaning belongs to him.
The Internet Angle
The internet has transformed the bald eagle into a meme with multiple personalities. In patriotic contexts, it remains a symbol of earnest nationalism. In ironic contexts, it is used to mock American exceptionalism — photos of eagles are captioned with absurdly over-the-top patriotic slogans, or paired with images of mundane American failures (fast food, traffic jams, medical bills). The eagle is also a staple of “Murica” memes, which satirize American stereotypes by leaning into them. On Reddit, r/MURICA celebrates the eagle as both a sincere symbol and a parody of itself. The internet has made the bald eagle a Rorschach test: what you see in it says more about your politics than about the bird.
