Banshee (from Irish Gaelic bean sí, meaning “woman of the fairy mounds”) is a female spirit in Irish folklore whose wailing or shrieking is said to foretell the death of a family member. The banshee is typically depicted as an old woman with long, flowing hair, dressed in a grey or white cloak, though some accounts describe her as a beautiful young woman or a washerwoman at a ford. Her cry — the caoineadh or keening — is described as piercing, mournful, and otherworldly, a sound that chills the blood of those who hear it. The banshee is not a bringer of death but a messenger of it, a supernatural alarm system that warns the living of impending loss.

The banshee matters because she is one of the most enduring figures in Celtic mythology, a symbol of the thin boundary between the living and the dead in Irish culture. The X-Men character Banshee (Sean Cassidy), who possesses a sonic scream, introduced the concept to comic book fans. The internet has thus both preserved and transformed the banshee: she is still a figure of death and mourning, but she is also a scream sound effect, a game character, and a Halloween costume. The ancient and the digital coexist, as they always do.
