Barrens chat refers to the notoriously chaotic, off-topic, and often absurd public chat channel in the Barrens, a large desert zone in the massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) World of Warcraft (2004). Because the Barrens was a low-level zone that players spent hours traversing, and because it was one of the most populated areas for Horde faction players, its chat channel became a breeding ground for every type of internet conversation: jokes, arguments, trolling, roleplay, political debates, Chuck Norris facts, and endless questions about where to find a specific quest objective. On r/classicwow, players who returned to World of Warcraft Classic in 2019 actively recreated Barrens chat, trying to capture the chaotic energy of the original.
