In contemporary slang, particularly in hip-hop and dating culture, “body count” refers to the number of sexual partners a person has had. The term has been popularized by the rap group Body Count, fronted by Ice-T, and has become a common topic in modern relationship discourse.
Why It Matters
The dual meaning of “body count” reveals something about how language absorbs violence and repurposes it. The military term, cold and statistical, measures death. The slang term, gossipy and judgmental, measures sex. Both usages reduce human complexity to a number.
