Definition
Bring Me the Horizon (often abbreviated as BMTH) is a British rock band from Sheffield, England, formed in 2004. What started as a deathcore project—complete with guttural screams, breakdowns, and lyrics that sounded like they were written in a haunted cemetery—has evolved into one of the most genre-fluid acts in modern music. Today, BMTH blends metalcore, electronic, pop, and even arena rock, fronted by the ever-charismatic Oliver Sykes.
Why It Matters
BMTH is the poster child for artistic evolution without apology. Their 2008 album Suicide Season was pure metalcore aggression. By 2013’s Sempiternal, they were adding electronic layers and cleaner vocals. 2019’s amo flirted with pop and even featured a Grimes collaboration. Purists screamed “sellout” — but the band kept selling out arenas instead. They proved that heavy music doesn’t have to stay in a box to keep its soul. In an era where genres are dissolving, BMTH wrote the blueprint.
Example
The song “Throne” (2015) is BMTH in a nutshell: a massive anthemic chorus that could fill a stadium, layered over a foundation of metalcore DNA. It went platinum in the US. Meanwhile, “Parasite Eve” (2020) was released during the pandemic with a music video featuring masked dancers and apocalyptic imagery—proof that even their “mainstream” moments carry conceptual weight. The band also launched their own festival, “The Tomorrow Movement,” and their own video game universe, POST HUMAN.
Internet Angle
BMTH is a meme goldmine. Oliver Sykes’ dramatic hair flips, the band’s endless genre switches, and their willingness to embrace TikTok have made them internet-native rock stars. The “Can you feel my heart?” TikTok audio from 2013 became a viral trend in 2023, used for everything from gym motivation to emotional breakdown compilations. The band leans into it—they know their audience lives on screens as much as in mosh pits.
