Brominated vegetable oil (BVO) is a food additive used primarily in citrus-flavored soft drinks to keep flavor oils evenly distributed throughout the liquid. It is produced by bonding bromine atoms to vegetable oil, creating a dense, viscous compound that prevents the separation of citrus oils from water. BVO has been used in the beverage industry since the 1930s and can be found in products such as certain formulations of Mountain Dew, Fanta, and other fruit-flavored sodas.
