Bulma is a fictional character in Dragon Ball, the iconic manga and anime created by Akira Toriyama. She debuts in the very first chapter (1984) as a teenage genius inventor searching for the Dragon Balls, and remains a central figure throughout the entire series — one of the longest-running anime franchises in history.
The daughter of Capsule Corporation founder Dr. Brief, Bulma is a brilliant scientist and engineer. She builds the Dragon Radar, repairs alien spaceships, designs time machines, and eventually helps invent the technology that allows Goku and friends to travel between planets. She is also Vegeta’s wife and the mother of Trunks and Bulla.
Why It Matters
Bulma is one of the most important female characters in shonen anime history — not as a fighter, but as a scientist. In a genre often criticized for sidelining women, Bulma built the gadgets that made the heroes’ adventures possible. Without her radar, the entire premise of searching for Dragon Balls doesn’t work. Without her time machine, the Cell Saga doesn’t happen.
Her character design and name (a pun on “bloomers,” continuing Toriyama’s underwear-naming convention) became instantly recognizable. She’s appeared in every Dragon Ball series, making her one of the most enduring characters in anime.
