Angry Inch refers to Hedwig and the Angry Inch, a 1998 off-Broadway rock musical (and 2001 film) by John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask. The story follows Hedwig Robinson, an East German transgender rock singer who undergoes a botched sex reassignment surgery — leaving her with a one-inch mound of flesh, the “angry inch” — and escapes to America, where she pursues a music career while searching for her other half. The musical is a punk-rock retelling of Plato’s Symposium, a meditation on gender and identity, and one of the most influential queer works of the late 20th century. The “angry inch” itself is both literal (the surgical result) and metaphorical (the gap between who we are and who we want to be).
