Who is Ali G?

Definition

Ali G is a satirical character created and performed by British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen. Ali G is a wannabe rapper and “gangsta” from the fictional Staines (now Staines-upon-Thames), who conducts absurd interviews with real politicians, celebrities, and experts while pretending to be a serious journalist. The character first appeared on British television in 1998 on The 11 O’Clock Show and later got his own series Da Ali G Show (2000–2004), which aired in the UK and later on HBO in the US. Ali G’s humor comes from the gap between his self-image (streetwise, credible) and his actual behavior (ridiculous, oblivious, often shockingly offensive).

Why It Matters

Ali G was one of the first characters to use the “fake journalist interviews real people” format that became a staple of comedy. Sacha Baron Cohen used Ali G to expose the absurdity of his interview subjects: politicians trying to appear hip, experts forced to explain complex topics to someone who clearly wasn’t listening, and celebrities desperate for any publicity. The character also satirized the adoption of hip-hop culture by white suburban youth — the “wiggas” and “chavs” who embraced a style without understanding its origins. Ali G was controversial: some accused the character of being racist, while others argued he was satirizing racism and ignorance. The debate itself was part of the point. Ali G paved the way for Baron Cohen’s even more infamous characters: Borat, Brüno, and Admiral General Aladeen.

Example

“He watched Ali G interview a British politician about education. Ali G asked if ‘maths was invented by the CIA to keep track of how many guns they had.’ The politician tried to answer seriously. He tried to explain that mathematics predated the CIA. Ali G nodded sagely. He wasn’t listening. He was performing. The politician was the joke.”
