Definition
Angry Joe (born Jose Antonio Vargas, 1984) is a Puerto Rican-American YouTuber, video game reviewer, and internet personality best known for his show AngryJoeShow, which he launched in 2008. Joe’s format combines high-production-value game reviews with skits, rants, and a rotating cast of characters including his friends and co-hosts. He is famous for his “Angry Reviews” — long-form, deeply critical video essays about video games that often run 30-60 minutes. Joe is also known for his passionate, sometimes controversial responses to game industry practices: he has called out microtransactions, predatory DLC, and corporate greed with a level of visible anger that makes other reviewers look sedated. His catchphrase “You done fucked it up!” has become a staple of gaming discourse.
Why It Matters
Angry Joe is the bridge between old-school gaming journalism and modern YouTube critique. Before the era of sponsored content and corporate-friendly reviews, Joe represented the voice of the consumer: someone who bought games with his own money and told you exactly what he thought, without filter or fear of losing access. His review of Star Wars Battlefront II (2017) — where he spent 40 minutes eviscerating the game’s microtransaction system — became a defining moment in the “loot box controversy” and contributed to EA’s stock dropping by $3 billion. Joe has also been controversial: his blunt style, his occasional factual errors, and his conflicts with other YouTubers have made him a polarizing figure. But his impact is undeniable. He proved that long-form, critical game reviews could thrive on YouTube, and he inspired a generation of gaming commentators who prioritize honesty over access. Angry Joe is not always right. But he is always angry. And in an industry built on hype, anger is a form of journalism.
Example
“He watched Angry Joe’s review of a game he was excited about. Joe hated it. He spent 45 minutes explaining why. The production values were high. The anger was real. The points were specific. He didn’t buy the game. He saved $60. He subscribed. That was the Joe contract. You watched. You got angry. You made better decisions. The anger was a service.”
