Who is Bono?

## Definition

Bono is Paul David Hewson, the lead singer of U2, one of the biggest rock bands in history. Born in Dublin in 1960, he named himself Bono after a hearing aid shop in his neighborhood (“Bono Vox” = “good voice” in Latinized Italian). He’s been the face of U2 since 1976, famous for his soaring vocals, theatrical stage presence, and those damn sunglasses he never takes off. But Bono is also one of the most prominent celebrity activists in the world, lobbying politicians, founding charities, and campaigning against poverty and disease in Africa.

## Why It Matters

Bono represents the complicated intersection of art and activism. He’s raised hundreds of millions for AIDS relief, debt cancellation, and poverty alleviation through organizations like DATA, ONE, and (RED). He’s met with popes, presidents, and prime ministers. He’s also been criticized — for tax avoidance (U2 moved part of their business to the Netherlands to reduce Irish tax liability), for being a “celebrity savior” who speaks over African voices, and for the general absurdity of a rock star in sunglasses telling world leaders how to run their countries. The backlash against Bono is as much a cultural phenomenon as his activism.

## Example

The 2005 Live 8 concerts — massive free concerts in multiple cities designed to pressure G8 leaders into debt relief — were Bono’s crowning achievement as an activist. They worked: the G8 agreed to cancel $40 billion in debt for 18 countries. Meanwhile, U2’s 2014 album *Songs of Innocence* was automatically pushed to every iPhone in the world, becoming the most distributed album in history and also the most complained-about. People who didn’t want U2 on their phones were furious. Bono later apologized. Even his mistakes are massive in scale.

## Internet Angle

The internet has a complicated relationship with Bono. Reddit alternates between acknowledging his genuine charitable impact and mocking his self-importance. “Bono” has become shorthand for “celebrity who won’t stop talking about their cause.” Memes about his sunglasses are endless. South Park’s episode “More Crap” features Bono as literally the world’s biggest piece of feces. And yet — U2’s music endures, their concerts still sell out, and Bono’s activism has undeniably saved lives. The internet can’t decide whether to admire or mock him, so it does both simultaneously.
