Basshunter (born Jonas Erik Altberg, 1984) is a Swedish singer, producer, and internet culture icon who became famous in the mid-2000s for combining electronic dance music with gaming culture. His breakthrough hits “Boten Anna” (2006) and “DotA” (2006) were sung in Swedish but became international phenomena, amassing hundreds of millions of views and turning a niche artist into a global meme.
“DotA” was essentially a tribute to the game Defense of the Ancients, a Warcraft III mod that later spawned the MOBA genre. The song’s lyrics reference game mechanics, characters, and the competitive culture around DotA. “Boten Anna” told a story about a female IRC bot — blending early internet chat culture with catchy Eurodance. Basshunter’s music was the soundtrack of the gaming-to-EDM pipeline that now dominates streaming culture.
Why It Matters
Basshunter was one of the first artists to explicitly bridge gaming and music at scale. In 2006, gaming culture was still niche and “uncool” — Basshunter made it catchy and mainstream. His songs are time capsules of mid-2000s internet culture: IRC bots, Warcraft III mods, Eurodance production, and the early YouTube era. He proved that “niche internet” content could achieve global commercial success.
Example
“Back in 2007, every LAN party played Basshunter on repeat. DotA was the anthem.”
The Internet Angle
Basshunter is a permanent fixture in nostalgia threads about “old internet culture.” His songs are regularly referenced in gaming communities as the “original gamer music.” On YouTube, his music videos are comment-section time capsules of 2000s internet culture. He remains a beloved figure in the DotA and League of Legends communities as the musician who “got it.”
