What is Battletoads?

Battletoads is a beat ’em up platformer video game developed by Rare and released for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1991. It is one of the most notoriously difficult games ever made — a brutal, fast-paced, visually chaotic experience that became legendary for breaking controllers and destroying friendships. The game follows three anthropomorphic toads (Rash, Zitz, and Pimple) as they battle the evil Dark Queen to rescue a kidnapped teammate. Its signature feature was the “Smash Hit” system, where the toads’ fists and feet would inflate into massive, exaggerated weapons upon connecting with enemies.

But Battletoads transcended its gameplay to become one of the most enduring memes in internet culture. In the mid-2000s, a prank emerged where people would call GameStop or other game stores and ask if they had Battletoads in stock. The prank became so widespread that it spawned Wikipedia articles, YouTube compilations, and even a 4chan raid that crashed a GameStop call-in show. The phrase “Do you have Battletoads?” became a universal troll — applied to any situation where someone was deliberately wasting another person’s time.

Why It Matters

Battletoads is a rare cultural artifact that exists in two entirely different universes: as a legitimate piece of gaming history (Rare’s creative platformer with innovative mechanics) and as an internet prank phenomenon that outlived the game itself. The difficulty of the original NES game is still discussed in “hardest games ever” debates, while the meme has persisted for nearly two decades. It is proof that internet culture can take any piece of media and repurpose it into something entirely new.

Example

“He called the White House switchboard and asked if Obama had Battletoads. The prank is immortal.”

The Internet Angle

The Battletoads prank is one of the most documented and celebrated internet trolls in history. YouTube compilations of “Battletoads calls” have millions of views. The meme has been referenced in TV shows (including Rick and Morty), news articles, and even by game developers themselves. In 2018, a new Battletoads game was announced for Xbox One, prompting jokes that the trolls would finally get their wish. On Reddit’s r/gaming and r/4chan, Battletoads is a foundational meme, referenced in any discussion about “classic internet pranks.”
