5.56×45mm NATO is the standard rifle cartridge for most Western militaries — and the round that changed how wars are fought.

Developed in the 1950s and 1960s, the 5.56 was designed to replace the larger 7.62×51mm NATO cartridge. The US military wanted a lighter round that soldiers could carry more of, with less recoil and higher accuracy in automatic fire. The result was a smaller, faster bullet — 55 to 77 grains, traveling at roughly 3,000 feet per second. It entered service with the M16 rifle during the Vietnam War.

The round’s performance in dense foliage and at long range was questioned. Decades later, in Afghanistan and Iraq, soldiers reported that the 5.56 failed to stop enemies behind cover or at distance. The US Army has repeatedly studied replacements, but the logistics of switching billions of rounds are staggering.

Outside the military, the 5.56 is the most common rifle caliber in American civilian shooting. The AR-15 platform, chambered in 5.56, is the best-selling rifle in the US. It appears in debates about gun control, mass shootings, and Second Amendment rights. The round is not just ammunition. It is a symbol.
