A brownout (also spelled brown out) is a drop in voltage in an electrical power supply, as opposed to a blackout, which is a complete loss of power. During a brownout, lights dim, electrical appliances may malfunction, and sensitive equipment can be damaged. The term “brownout” comes from the dimming of incandescent light bulbs, which turn brownish when voltage drops. Brownouts can be caused by high electricity demand (during heat waves, for example), by faults in the power grid, or deliberately by utility companies as a way to reduce load and prevent a complete blackout. In a second, slang meaning, “brownout” refers to a period of alcohol-induced memory loss less severe than a blackout: a person in a brownout may forget parts of an evening but retain fragments, as opposed to a blackout, where entire hours are erased.
