Angry Video Game Nerd (AVGN) is a web series created by James Rolfe in 2004, originally under the title “Angry Nintendo Nerd.” The show features Rolfe as a character who reviews retro video games — primarily from the NES era — with explosive, profanity-laced rants about their bad design, broken mechanics, and absurd difficulty. The Nerd is famous for his beer drinking, his collection of bizarre gaming peripherals, and his catchphrases like “What were they thinking?!” and “I’d rather (do something horrible) than play this game.” The series became one of the defining works of early YouTube gaming culture and inspired an entire generation of gaming commentators, reviewers, and YouTubers.
