Definition
Al Gore (born 1948) is an American politician, environmental activist, and former Vice President under Bill Clinton (1993-2001). But for most people, Al Gore is not a politician — he’s a meme. He lost the controversial 2000 presidential election to George W. Bush after a Supreme Court decision stopped the Florida recount. He then reinvented himself as a climate activist, won the Nobel Peace Prize and an Academy Award for An Inconvenient Truth, and spent two decades being the internet’s favorite punching bag for jokes about inventing the internet, boring speeches, and robotic mannerisms.
Why It Matters
Al Gore is the internet’s original target for both political ridicule and genuine respect. The “Al Gore invented the internet” meme is based on a misquote: in a 1999 CNN interview, Gore said he “took the initiative in creating the internet” (referring to his legislative support for funding the early internet). The internet turned this into a running joke. But the other half of the Al Gore story is more serious: An Inconvenient Truth (2006) was one of the most successful documentary films ever made, and Gore’s climate advocacy was prescient. He became both a symbol of political failure and a prophet of environmental catastrophe — a duality that makes him one of the most complex figures in modern American politics.
