Definition
Alphabet is an American multinational technology conglomerate holding company founded in 2015 by Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin. Alphabet was created as a restructuring of Google: the search engine and its related products (YouTube, Android, Google Maps) remained under Google, while “moonshot” projects like Waymo (self-driving cars), Verily (life sciences), and Google X (experimental technology) were placed under separate subsidiaries. The name reflects the company’s ambition: “alpha” is investment return above benchmark, and “bet” is a wager on the future. Alphabet is one of the most valuable companies in the world, and its structure is a model for how tech giants manage innovation and risk.
Why It Matters
Alphabet is the architecture of modern capitalism. It owns the search engine that answers 90% of the world’s queries, the video platform that dominates online culture, the mobile operating system that runs most of the world’s smartphones, and the advertising infrastructure that funds most of the internet. The creation of Alphabet was an admission that Google had become too big and too diverse to be managed as a single company. It also allowed the founders to step back from daily management while retaining control. The name “Alphabet” is itself a statement: we are not just a company. We are the building blocks of information. The criticism of Alphabet is the criticism of all Big Tech: too much power, too little accountability, and a business model built on surveillance. The defense is that Alphabet’s products are genuinely useful, often free, and constantly innovating. Both are true. That is the paradox.
