Amazon is an American multinational technology company founded by Jeff Bezos in 1994, originally as an online bookstore. It has since grown into one of the largest and most influential companies in the world, dominating e-commerce, cloud computing (Amazon Web Services), digital streaming, artificial intelligence, and logistics. Amazon is the Everything Store: you can buy books, electronics, groceries, cloud servers, and even satellite internet. The company is also one of the most controversial, criticized for its treatment of warehouse workers, its market dominance, its tax strategies, and its impact on small businesses. Amazon is both the most convenient and most feared company in modern capitalism.
Why It Matters
Amazon has reshaped global commerce. Its Prime membership program — offering free shipping, streaming, and other benefits — created a new standard for customer expectations. Amazon Web Services (AWS) powers roughly a third of the internet, including Netflix, Spotify, and NASA. Amazon’s logistics network is so advanced that it can deliver products in hours, not days. But the convenience comes with costs: warehouse workers report grueling conditions, bathroom-break monitoring, and injury rates far above industry averages. Amazon’s market power has also led to antitrust investigations in the US and EU. The company is the ultimate symbol of 21st-century capitalism: incredibly efficient, incredibly powerful, and incredibly controversial. You can’t avoid it.
