Antivirus software is a type of computer program designed to detect, prevent, and remove malware — viruses, worms, trojans, ransomware, and other malicious software. The first antivirus programs emerged in the 1980s, and the industry grew into a multi-billion-dollar market dominated by companies like Norton, McAfee, Kaspersky, and Windows Defender. But antivirus software has become increasingly controversial: many security experts argue that traditional signature-based antivirus is obsolete, unable to keep up with modern threats, and itself a security risk due to its deep system access. The 2017 WannaCry ransomware attack, which exploited a vulnerability that antivirus software could not prevent, was a turning point. Today, “endpoint protection” and “behavioral analysis” have replaced pure antivirus, and many tech-savvy users argue that the best antivirus is “common sense and an ad blocker.”

Why It Matters

Antivirus software is the most successful scam in computing history — not because it doesn’t work, but because it works just well enough to make you keep paying for it, while failing often enough to make you feel like you need more of it. The industry perfected the fear-based business model: scare the user with viruses, sell them protection, then scare them with new viruses. The result is computers slowed down by bloated antivirus programs that consume more resources than the malware they claim to prevent. The internet has turned antivirus into a meme: the Norton popup that won’t close, the McAfee subscription that auto-renews, the Windows Defender notification that interrupts your game. But the real joke is that antivirus is often the weakest link in security: the 2020 SolarWinds hack, one of the most sophisticated cyberattacks in history, was executed by compromising… an IT security company’s software. The hackers didn’t bypass antivirus. They used it.
