What is the Alt Right?

Definition

Alt Right (short for “Alternative Right”) is a far-right political movement that emerged in the 2010s, characterized by white nationalism, anti-immigration rhetoric, opposition to political correctness, and a heavy presence on internet forums, imageboards, and social media. The term was coined by white nationalist Richard Spencer in 2008 but gained mainstream attention during the 2016 US presidential election, when figures like Steve Bannon and media outlet Breitbart News became associated with the movement. The alt right is notable for its use of internet culture — memes, irony, and trolling — as political tools, and for its rejection of mainstream conservatism.

Why It Matters

The alt right demonstrated that internet culture and political extremism could merge into something new and dangerous. The movement used platforms like 4chan, Reddit, and Twitter to spread ideologies disguised as jokes, memes, and irony. The Pepe the Frog meme was co-opted as a symbol. The “OK” hand gesture was falsely claimed as a white power sign. The alt right also revealed the limits of online irony: when everything is a joke, nothing is a joke, and actual hate can hide behind the claim that it’s “just trolling.” The movement fragmented after 2017 (Charlottesville, deplatforming, Spencer’s decline), but its tactics — using internet culture to mainstream extremism — were adopted by movements worldwide. The alt right is not just a political movement. It is a case study in how the internet can radicalize people through humor, community, and incremental exposure.

Example

“He started posting ironic memes on a forum. The memes became less ironic. The forum became less joking. The jokes became beliefs. The beliefs became actions. He didn’t notice the transition. The internet doesn’t announce when irony becomes ideology. It just keeps scrolling.”
