Throwback Thursday, or TBT, is the internet’s weekly nostalgia ritual.
Every Thursday, social media floods with old photos: childhood snapshots, high school awkwardness, first jobs, bad haircuts, worse fashion. The rule is simple — post something from the past, tag it #TBT, and let the likes roll in.
The trend started on Instagram around 2011 and spread everywhere. It became so ingrained that “throwback” entered everyday language. Radio stations do “throwback” hours. Streaming services have “throwback” playlists. Your uncle probably says it now.
Why Thursday? Nobody knows. The alliteration helped. So did the fact that Thursday is close enough to the weekend to feel casual, but far enough from Monday to avoid looking like you’re slacking.
TBT works because nostalgia is easy content. You do not need to create anything new. You just reach into the past, find a photo where you looked different, and let people tell you how cute you were. It is the laziest form of storytelling — and one of the most popular.
