YOLO stands for “You Only Live Once.” It became the battle cry of a generation that wanted to do stupid things and feel smart about it.
The phrase exploded in 2011, largely thanks to Drake’s song “The Motto.” Suddenly, everyone was using YOLO to justify bad decisions: eating a third burger, quitting a job without a plan, jumping off a roof into a pool. It was part philosophy, part excuse.
Critics mocked it as the anthem of recklessness. Supporters defended it as a call to seize the day. Both were right. YOLO was never really about wisdom. It was about permission — the feeling that your life is a movie, and you might as well make the montage interesting.
By 2015, the internet had turned on it. YOLO became a joke, then a cliché, then a nostalgia piece. But the idea never really died. It just got quieter. Every time someone quits a stable job to travel, or texts an ex at 2 AM, YOLO lives on in spirit.
You only live once. Probably best not to waste it on a hashtag.
