Who is Alexander the Great?

Definition

Alexander the Great (356–323 BCE) was the king of Macedonia who conquered one of the largest empires in ancient history, stretching from Greece to Egypt to India — all before he died at age 32. He was tutored by Aristotle as a child, succeeded his father Philip II at 20, and spent the next 12 years undefeated in battle, conquering the Persian Empire, founding over 70 cities (many named Alexandria), and spreading Greek culture across the known world. Alexander’s military tactics are still studied in war colleges. His ego was legendary: he reportedly wept when told there were infinite worlds, because he had not yet conquered even one.

Why It Matters

Alexander is the archetype of the young, brilliant conqueror who achieves too much too fast and destroys himself in the process. His empire collapsed immediately after his death because he had no succession plan — he was too busy conquering to govern. But his cultural impact, the Hellenistic period, lasted for centuries. Greek language, art, and philosophy spread from Egypt to Central Asia, creating a shared culture that influenced Rome, Christianity, and eventually the Renaissance. Alexander also represents the ultimate toxic masculinity: brilliant, charismatic, violent, and incapable of stopping. He died of fever, exhaustion, or poisoning (historians debate), leaving behind an empire that was a house of cards and a legend that has lasted 2,300 years.

Example

“He read about Alexander at 16 and wanted to conquer something. He conquered his fear of public speaking. He conquered his algebra test. He did not conquer the Persian Empire. He was okay with that. Alexander had an army. He had a tutor. Perspective is important.”
