Definition
Ash Williams is the protagonist of the Evil Dead horror film franchise, portrayed by Bruce Campbell. Created by director Sam Raimi, Ash first appeared in the 1981 low-budget horror film The Evil Dead, a story of five college students who unleash demonic forces in a remote cabin. Ash returned in Evil Dead II (1987), which blended horror with slapstick comedy, and Army of Darkness (1992), which transported Ash to medieval times and fully embraced campy action-adventure. Ash is defined by his combination of everyman vulnerability and absurd heroism: he is not a trained warrior or a chosen one. He is a discount store clerk (later called a “housewares employee”) who happens to be very good at killing demons, primarily using his signature weapon — a shotgun and a chainsaw attached to the stump of his severed hand. The character became a cult icon, spawning a comic book series, video games, and the TV series Ash vs Evil Dead (2015–2018), which brought Campbell back to the role after a 23-year absence.
Why It Matters
Ash Williams is the internet’s favorite horror hero who is also a complete idiot. He is not clever. He is not brave. He is just stubborn, lucky, and equipped with a chainsaw. The internet loves Ash because he represents a specific type of hero: the loser who wins not through skill but through refusal to die. His one-liners — “Groovy,” “Hail to the king, baby,” “This is my boomstick!” — are quoted endlessly in gaming and horror communities. The “boomstick” speech from Army of Darkness, where Ash explains his shotgun to medieval peasants, is a masterpiece of campy masculinity and has been parodied, remixed, and referenced across all internet media. Ash also matters because he is the bridge between horror and comedy: Evil Dead II is essentially a Three Stooges routine with demons, and it proved that horror could be funny without being a parody. The internet’s embrace of Ash is a rejection of the “cool” horror hero. Ash is not cool. Ash is ridiculous. And ridiculous is more relatable than cool.
Example
“He watched Army of Darkness at 16. He didn’t know what it was. It was horror. It was comedy. It was history. It was nonsense. Ash fought skeletons with a chainsaw hand. He made jokes. He was not cool. He was trying to be cool. The trying was the cool. He quoted ‘Hail to the king, baby’ for years. He didn’t know why. It was not a good line. It was a perfect line. It was Ash. Ash was not good. Ash was perfect. The internet agreed. The internet was also not good. The internet was also perfect. That was the connection.”
