Definition
As I Lay Dying is an American metalcore band from San Diego, California, formed in 2000. The band became one of the most successful and influential acts in the metalcore genre, blending aggressive breakdowns, melodic guitar harmonies, and clean sung choruses. Their breakthrough album, An Ocean Between Us (2007), reached No. 8 on the Billboard 200, and the single “The Sound of Truth” became a staple of the metalcore sound. The band’s 2012 album Awakened continued their commercial success. However, As I Lay Dying’s legacy was permanently complicated in 2013 when frontman Tim Lambesis was arrested for solicitation of murder after attempting to hire an undercover detective to kill his estranged wife. Lambesis pleaded guilty and served six years in prison. In a bizarre twist, the band reunited with Lambesis after his release in 2016, releasing new music and touring, a decision that divided the metal community between those who believe in redemption and those who cannot forgive.
