Definition
Alan Moore (born 1953) is a British comic book writer, novelist, and occultist widely regarded as one of the most influential writers in the history of comics. His works include Watchmen (1986-87), V for Vendetta (1982-89), From Hell (1989-98), The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (1999-2019), and Swamp Thing (1984-87). Moore is known for deconstructing superhero tropes, dense literary references, and a personal life that includes practicing magic, worshipping a Roman snake god, and refusing to watch any film adaptations of his work.
Why It Matters
Alan Moore changed comics from children’s entertainment to adult literature. Watchmen is often cited as the greatest comic book ever written — a dark, complex examination of superheroes as fascist figures, which influenced everything from The Dark Knight to The Boys. Moore’s V for Vendetta gave the world the Guy Fawkes mask that became the symbol of Anonymous and the Occupy movement. His From Hell remains one of the most disturbing and meticulously researched works about Jack the Ripper. But Moore is also famous for his conflicts with publishers: he has disowned almost every film adaptation of his work, including Watchmen (2009) and V for Vendetta (2005), calling them “embarrassing” and “ridiculous.” He lives in Northampton, practices ceremonial magic, and grows his beard to epic lengths. He is, by any measure, one of the strangest and most brilliant figures in modern literature.
Example
“He read Watchmen at 18 and never looked at superheroes the same way. The hero was a psychopath. The villain was right. The ending was ambiguous. He tried to explain it to his friends. They preferred Marvel movies. He understood, suddenly, that Moore had written for a different audience — one that was comfortable with discomfort.”
